SOLD - 1989 Suzuki Jimny Soft Top

Sourced and Imported on behalf of a client via our Japanese Classic Import Service, this is a great example of the quality and preservation that makes importing a car from Japan so much fun. If you're interested in bringing in something like this, be sure to get in touch via our Contact Page!

This larger than life offroader demonstrates the era defying timelessness of utility in design.

A vehicle like this is hard for people to place in America, most of the ones originally sold here have rusted away in fields, their useful lives shortened by the perception of their value as anything other than disposable tools. But take a step outside of the USA, as close as our Caribbean neighbors to as far as the mountains of Himalayan India, and the humble Suzuki Jimny and it's siblings are a well-loved and time proven platform for just about any task that takes place where flat pavement is not immediately available.

This particular Jimny is a Japanese Domestic market version, circa 1989. At that time, kei-class vehicles were regulated to engines under 550cc, and so this model comes equipped with a whopping 51 horsepower out of the turbo 3 cylinder. I mean, look at this engine! The 5FA is about the size of two loaves of bread stacked on top of each other!

But we don't drive spec sheets here. The attitude and presence that a car like this exudes exempts it from judgement just like it's kei categorization exempts it from excess road-taxes in Japan.

Maybe this comes as a surprise to many, but kei is not a class reserved for those minitrucks you've seen. There's a wide variety of cars that are considered "kei" and this is one of them! You wouldn't know just by looking that it fits within the diminutive dimensional requirements of those other micro cars, but put this next to something you're more used to seeing in the US, and suddenly the larger than life nature of this car comes into sharp relief.

Here at Concourse Underground we like things that are a little special, too, some extra Japanese... flair. This 89 has been tastefully apportioned by APIO, the premier Jimny tuning company in Japan. Think along the likes of Top Secret Supras, Garage Active GTRs, Spoon Hondas... but for Jimnys!

This here is really something special for enthusiasts. A 2 inch body lift, Recaro bucket, PIAA fog lamps, APIO skid plates and bashbar, and of course, no Japanese build would be complete without a set of insane wheels. These classic 3 piece Weds Adventures are not only in unbelievable shape and draw droppingly beautiful, but they are quite rare to boot. This particular model, with the full edge on the face here going around is not a feature I've been able to positively match while looking through old photos and catalogs online. If you know anything about these wheels, get in touch, I'd love to know more.

This is just one very Japanese variety of the humble Suzuki. The world of Suzuki Smaurais, Stockmans, Mils, Sierras, Katanas, Rickman Rangers and even the Maruti Gypsy is vast and intricate. Loved the world over for modifications, from mountain climbing altitude record breakers in South America to street cleaning 13B turbo swaps popular of Puerto Rico to hay bale carrying truckbed variants of Indian rural states.
